The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country after the United States and the United Kingdom. In addition to the national languages of Filipino (Tagalog) and English, over 111 individual languages and dialects throughout the country. Makes sense when you remember that there are over 7,000 islands.
When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, there was no common language between the archipelago, and even today, only about 55% of the nation speaks Tagalog.
